Ten Most Memorable Meals of 2023

If you know me, you know I love food. At the end of each year, I like looking back at some of the most memorable meals of the previous 12 months. This includes not just the food, but friends, family, and funny circumstances that involved the eating of it. And so, without further ado, here are the top ten most memorable meals of 2023.

#10. La Torre Imperial at Isla del Mar in Omaha

Vivian and I celebrated our wedding anniversary with lunch at Isla del Mar, a Mexican seafood restaurant down in the heart of South Omaha. We usually have lobster somewhere in the mix, which we had this time in the form of some sushi rolls. The main dish, however, was ceviche, specifically “La Torre Imperial” for me. It’s a tower of fish ceviche with aguachile shrimp, cooked shrimp, breaded shrimp, octopus, avocado, cucumber, red onion, tomato, and “sauce of the house.”

Our anniversary came in the midst of a frenzied week of VBS at Wildewood, but this was a nice, refreshing break from it all in the middle of the day.

#9. Casey’s Pizza

Casey is a gas station in the Midwest that for some reason has become noteworthy for carrying pizza, so much so that Hannah was quite shocked to learn they also had gasoline. it’s become a frequent go-to place to grab pizza for dinner when we have to have a family movie night or something quick to eat when coming home from the park. Aaron even noticed a sign for their “Pepperoni, Pepperoni, Pepperoni” Pizza and immediately wanted to have one. If you haven’t gotten pizza here before, check them out. (And that includes the breakfast pizza.)

#8. Vivian’s Charcuterie Board

Our annual Cheese & Hors d’oeuvres Party has been a tradition for some time now, and every year our friends bring over any number of fun, bite-sized things to eat. This year, however, Vivian went hog-wild with her contribution of a massive charcuterie board. It was actually set into a stone baking pan, and every square inch of the thing was packed with nuts, olives, crackers, cheese, and meats — so dense and so neatly arranged that it was hard to take in all at once. We didn’t get anywhere close to eating it, either, but that only meant lots of leftovers to take with me to work (in the form of an insane trail mix).

#7. Lunchbreak with Vivek

Vivek Ramaswamy has been holding numerous campaign events across Iowa this year, and all four of the ones I’ve attended have had food. The first was “Cake with Vivek” in Treynor. Then in October, I had pulled pork with my dad when we saw Vivek in Glenwood. In December, I got to have pizza with him again at Barley’s in Council Bluffs (with enough to take home leftovers).

The most memorable occasion, however, was when he came to The Gathering Room in Council Bluffs and had nachos. I went there with Hannah, who was able to meet him afterward and even stay for a press conference. I wasn’t entirely sure how much of the politics Hannah will remember of this year, but she referred to the event with Vivek afterward as “that nacho place.” (And I even thanked Vivek personally for the nachos, which were great.)

#6. Valentine’s Day Lunch at Graley’s

We had a cold and rainy Valentine’s Day this year, and Vivian and I enjoyed it over lunch at Graley’s in downtown Papillion. They’re known mostly for ice cream, but during the winter months they have such things as savory “hand pies,” soup, and hot cocoa, which made for the most cozy and relaxing lunch together.

Honorable mention: That evening, we had a fun little dinner at Village Inn with the kids, which was nearly empty and somewhat memorable as our meals of burgers and chicken fried steak managed to get dropped on the floor (and then quickly replaced and comped).

IMG_9473
#5. Vivian’s Non-Stop Ramen Obsession

Vivian has frequent food obsessions year by  year, and 2023 was undoubted the Year of Ramen. I’m not sure when it started, though she wanted to have Ramen both for our sushi anniversary and then again on her birthday. Then throughout the rest of the year, she’s been making various recipes almost constantly from YouTubers she follows online, with requests from the local Asian grocery store for ingredients on her birthday and at Christmas.

Whatever the reason, the Ramen she puts together at home are quite lovely and delicious. Even the one made with peanut butter.

IMG_2424
#4. Jen’s Birthday Pho Crawl

The 27th Street corridor north of O Street in Lincoln has a large Vietnamese community, and as such has multiple Vietnamese restaurants where you can get more than your fill of Pho. Our friends Phil and Jen had planned some kind of “Pho Crawl” along this street for years, and they finally had one for Jen’s birthday. We wound up going to three different restaurants, trying three bowls of Pho along with a few other unique Vietnamese, including a frittata thing and some Vietnamese iced coffee (which you can see impressed Vivian in this photo).

#3. Family Reunion in Cedar Rapids

This year, we had a long-awaited family reunion in Cedar Rapids, with uncles, aunts, cousins, and others we hadn’t seen in years (and our kids certainly didn’t remember). There were several memorable meals over this weekend, including one at the Flying Weenie, another at a Hy-Vee café, and one at the Machine Shed in Des Moines on the way home, as well as the picnic lunch at we had at Cedar Valley Park on Saturday.

I think the most memorable of the bunch for me was the little Maid-Rite down on 1st Avenue Downtown. It’s an old-school loose-meat sandwich place that is apparently a staple of Iowa fast food, but it was fun to eat down there when we first arrived in Cedar Rapids. It’s even located right along the Lincoln Highway, whose history I bored Vivian and the kids with multiple times over the trip.

#2. Matt’s Steak & Potatoes Birthday Dinner

Vivian kept asking what I wanted to do for my birthday, so I had no idea she’d had a plan. Then she balked at my sudden suggestion of tacos down in Papillion, and when I asked if she had something else in mind, Aaron blurted out, “IT’S STEAK!”

in this case, it was a tasty rib-eye steak with mushrooms and roasted garlic along with and a loaded baked potato on a side. Very much my favorite meal!

#1. Jack’s 80th Birthday Dinner

Vivian’s dad turned 80 years old this year, and he celebrated the way that he likes best — grilling out on the driveway. .This year, he had rib-eye steaks for us along with some truffle mac and cheese and some shrimp on top, making for some lovely turn-and-turf. We ate out on the porch and had a lovely time celebrating another year with him.

White Christmas

Merry Christmas, everyone! We hope you got to enjoy your holiday in much the same way we did — spending lots of time with family over a three-day weekend opening presents and eating way too much food.

2023-12-24 10.33.112023-12-24 10.35.27

On Sunday morning, I put on my Christmas tie and then we kicked off Christmas Eve with a “Christmas Eve” service at Wildewood. It was very much like a normal church service, though there was no Sunday school for the kids, so Hannah and Aaron got to sit with us.

Pastor Ron gave a Christmas sermon and then lit the final Advent candle. Then the congregation gathered its own candles as Pastor Ron and Robin used the advent candle to light their own candles and pass it along throughout the room. Then they turned down the lights as we all sang Silent Night together.

IMG_0385IMG_0369

We headed home afterward to tidy up a bit and check in on Santa via the NORAD Santa tracker throughout the day. Then around three o’clock, I donned my Christmas shirt we dropped by my parents’ house to visit with them and Uncles Jonny and Nathan for a bit. In addition to things like chocolate, Battleship, and Babylon 5 (season 2), each member of the Johnson Family also got a pair of sunglasses, which we used afterward for a family photo.

After that, we got a couple photos with our whole family together, including Sheryl, courtesy of my tripod. Sheryl brought along some Filipino stir-fry, quail eggs, and ube cakes, which we ate together afterward. We only see Sheryl a couple times a year, but she always feeds us well. We stayed a little afterward to visit as Aaron forewent his new gifts and broke out the vintage blocks my dad had growing up to play with before we headed home.

IMG_0396IMG_0445

Then that evening, Hannah and Aaron opened the last of our Advent jellies before we had some hors d’oeuvres for dinner with Jack and Donna. Vivian had found a recipe for baked candied bacon crackers made with club crackers, bacon, and brown sugar (courtesy of YouTuber, “ThatDudeCanCook”). Then we spent an hour or two opening “stocking presents” together. We even brought out Harold for a little time outside with us.

After that, we got the kids into their new Christmas jammies, and then once they were in bed, we brought up the presents to lay down under the tree before settling our brains for a long winter’s nap.

IMG_04542023-12-25 11.52.15

And then came Christmas morning! Grammy and Pop-Pop were over bright and early, and we spent the morning opening presents together in our living room. We each got some custom-print blankets with things like guinea pigs, sushi, pizza, and Ramen noodles, Hannah got a tiny silicone baby doll, Aaron got Super Mario Wonder, and I got some new clothes.

We took a break for me to make some of my traditional Christmas quiche for breakfast as we opened our gifts. We also got a bit of snow after a week or more of unseasonable warmth, which came down in sprinkles throughout the morning, giving us a White Christmas.

IMG_9026IMG_9077

We had a quiet afternoon with the kids playing with their gifts as I took Bella out for a walk and walked by my parents’ house with a batch of leftover quiche for them to enjoy. I played some Christmas movies downstairs in the meantime courtesy of our Blue Raspberry Pi.

Later that afternoon, Vivian and her dad made some roast beef for our Christmas dinner, and Vivian even made a cute holly centerpiece made of balloon art to go with our meal. We had some pumpkin pie together for dessert and watched the Christmas Chronicles on Netflix before drawing our lovely Christmas weekend to a close.

Careening into Christmas

Christmas is almost here, which means cramming as much holiday preparation and fun into every spare moment we have in the days leading up.

IMG_9928IMG_9995

We’ve had a remarkably warm December so far, which made for a lovely time out looking at some Christmas lights on Tuesday. We dropped by Washington Park with the kids to see some of their musical display, which they have up every year. Hannah and Aaron also got to play on the swings a bit, reenacting the “funny daddy water” game I played with Hannah since she was two.

We move along after that to downtown Papillion, walking by the library and the shops along Washington Avenue. to see the larger display down at First Street Plaza. We stopped by Graley’s to get some hot cocoa and egg nog ice cream before returning to our car. Then we took one last trip down by Wood River Drive to see some of the houses decorated there before heading back home.

IMG_0046IMG_0080

Vivian and I finally finished up our Christmas letters, which I dropped into the mail on a bike ride this week. Then on Wednesday, the Royal Rangers had their Council of Achievement night, and Aaron and his Rangers friends got to receive their patches so far for the year.

We stayed afterward to have some cookies and treats as Aaron got to have some quality time playing with Gabe before getting a proper sugar high and heading on home.

IMG_0173IMG_0196

Then on Thursday (the Winter Solstice), we dropped the Mills’ house to go caroling around their neighborhood with their kids (and Milo) and a set of jingle bells for a little over an hour. It was a balmy 51 degrees outside, and Hannah didn’t even need her coat as we walked house-to-house around the block singing Hark the Herald (Harold) Angels Sing, Jingle Bells, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. We got to see one home with some giant skeletons outside, which they apparently leave up all year long, changing their costumes for the various holidays. At some houses, nobody answered the door, and we wound up singing for the sake of the Ring doorbell video. At others, whole families came out to listen, and at one, a little boy home along got his own jingle bells to jingle with us.

Afterward, we returned to the Mills’ house, where we had some of the cake that Sam had made earlier that day.

IMG_02182023-12-23 20.01.12

Then on Saturday, in the midst of wrapping presents and getting ready for Christmas, Vivian and I had our First Date Anniversary. It’s been 17 years since I first asked her out to dinner in the Old Market. This time, I found a ramen place down a dark alley that was very much a “hole in the wall.” We had some seafood ramen and dumplings and then spent a little time touring the Old Market.

We stopped by the Imaginarium to look at some vintage toys, and then we dropped into the Old Market Candy Shop for some eggnog fudge. We also took a nice, long stroll around the Gene Leahy Mall, checking out the fishbone pier for the first time and enjoying the unseasonably warm December evening. The listening moisture of some earlier drizzle made all the Christmas lights sparkle on the brick streets.

Next stop: Christmas!

Trampolines, Politics, and a Christmas Party

It’s the week before Christmas, and it seems the holiday activity has reached a fever pitch. Of course, it’s also a few weeks from the Iowa Caucuses, which means a non-stop rush of campaigning from Presidential candidates across the river in Iowa.

2023-12-14 12.31.482023-12-14 13.00.24

The weather’s been nice enough for a few more bike rides (with some bundling up), and they even managed to re-open the Center Street bridge after 1 year, 2 months, and 7 days (but who’s counting?)

On Thursday, I also pedaled on down to Chick-Fil-A for a rare lunchtime meetup with Vivian and the kids. We had some chicken sandwiches together and let Aaron get one last visit to the play area while he was (almost) still small enough for it.

IMG_9580IMG_9592

Then that evening, Vivek Ramaswamy paid another visit to the Omaha area, hosting a town hall in the crowded upper room at Barley’s. I’d seen numerous candidates at this venue before but never in the upstairs dining area (which I didn’t even know existed). Vivek bought pizza for everyone and then took numerous questions from the crowd. I got to ask the first one, which was about spirituality and unity in America (which you can watch here).

My friends Dave and Denise also got to ask a few questions, as did a ten-year-old aspiring author named Cole, who got a book autographed by Vivek afterward.

This was my fourth time seeing Vivek, but every time seems to be quite engaging, and he has a ridiculous amount of energy as he hosts upwards of eight of these events in a day.

IMG_9662IMG_9651

On Saturday, our friends the Dougans hosted another Christmas party at their house in Bennington, so we drove up to join them and a handful of our friends in some holiday festivities. Kody had some smoked beef brisket for us, and Jenny made a peppermint trifle for dessert. It was also the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, so I had a glass of iced tea to mark the occasion.

Vivian and I also wore our “Todd and Margo” shirts once again. Vivian and Jen exchanged some balloon-making tips, and we all got to say hello to Jenny and Kody’s new son William for the first time.

IMG_9728IMG_9762

On Sunday, I wore one of my dad’s Christmas ties to church, where Vivian performed in the special Christmas choir for everyone.

Then that afternoon, I took the kids down to Sky Zone for an hour or two of bouncing around. They got some pizza for lunch and then got to burn it off on an obstacle course, some basketball hoops, and a number of foam pits to swing over and land inside.

Then later on, Aaron beat Super Punch Out for the first time, and Vivian made some spicy seafood Ramen for dinner.

IMG_98882023-12-18 19.55.34

I got to engage in some more politics Monday night as Nikki Haley, one of the few Presidential candidates I haven’t met in person yet, came to Treynor, Iowa for a townhall. Her event had a heavy amount of media present for some reason, with space for ten networks on the risers alone and multiple people getting video reactions from attendees. Among the guests were Don Bacon’s wife Angie and his campaign manager, which suggested to me that Haley might be getting an endorsement from the Congressman soon.

Haley herself seemed like a fairly solid candidate, touching on domestic issues and various conflicts overseas — the latter of which she was definitely “hawkish” about. She took questions from the crowd afterward, the first from me (again), as I asked what she hoped to do about the military’s record low recruitment levels. I stuck around afterward for a selfie and even got Hannah on Facebook live to say hello. That was particularly fun.

Birthdays, DeSantis, and Santa

2023-12-06 12.24.292023-12-06 20.04.40

We enjoyed a little more unseasonably warm weather last week, which was perfect of a couple more lunch time bike rides for me (without a jacket). I had a tire that needed to be repaired, and I found a tire place right along the Keystone Trail to take it to. I thought I’d have to leave it there and go riding for a bit, but it was fixed and back on the car within 20 minutes.

Aaron also had another busy night at Royal Rangers trying to rearrange himself and the rest of his Discovery group while standing on a plank together.

2023-12-07 18.37.02IMG_9284

On Thursday night, Ron DeSantis (with a new pair of shoes) and his wife Casey had a meet-and-greet in downtown Council Bluffs at Lincoln’s Pub on West Broadway. The last time I’d been to this location, it was called Dixie Quicks and I was there to see Carly Fiorina (with my dad and Hannah). It was a small crowd, around 125-150 people, so it was fairly easy for me to get a nice spot near the front to snap pictures and even ask a question during the Q&A, which was fun.

Of course, I also got a selfie with the Governor after the event and also shook hands with his wife. The campaign bus was outside, so I signed my Twitter handle on it before it left for the evening.

IMG_93472023-12-10 15.57.00

I celebrated both my parents’ birthdays over the weekend. My mom and dad have birthdays two days apart, so they generally get celebrated at the same time. I went to their house to do a bit of clean-up on Saturday and helped put up a few Christmas decorations. Then we had some sandwiches for lunch along with a birthday cake I’d made myself (with candles to blow out). After that, we watched some newly-transferred home movies, one of which was a hilariously dated Amoco training video that may go viral online if we get around to sharing it.

I came back on Sunday with the kids to watch grandma and grandpa open a couple of the presents I’d bought for them. Then before I left, a policeman stopped on the door to serve a subpoena to both my parents to testify in the murder trial of their former neighbor, Adam Price (which I’d written about on my blog over two years ago). Life moves fast around here.

IMG_94352023-12-10 18.22.36

On Sunday night, we took the kids down to the Children’s Museum. The exhibits were much the same as they were when we visited back in August, including the traveling dinosaur exhibit, but this time around our kids got to see Santa. They’re already too old to “believe” in Santa, and they will likely be too old so fit on his lap in a year or two, but it was still nice to indulge in a childhood tradition once again.

They got to spend some time doing a puppet show, coloring characters to roam a winter landscape, and have fun with the balls in the pneumatic tubes. We’ve been visiting this place for over a decade at this point, but it’s nice to see the kids still being able to enjoy it.

IMG_9500IMG_9497

Then on Monday, I dropped by the Pachyderm luncheon to hear from Unicameral speaker John Arch talk about the tumultuous session we’d had in 2023 and what to expect in 2024. Despite theatrics at the capitol over the last session, he said they’d managed to get a fair number of bills passed, and next year he expects a few rule changes, particularly some changes with regard to cloture, will make things operate a bit more smoothly. We’ll see how that plays out.

You can read about that in a bit more detail over on my political blog.

The Advent-ure Begins

We’ve just finished the Thanksgiving leftovers and are now careening toward Christmas. I’m already juggling lists and trying to keep up, as I haven’t even gotten all our Christmas decorations out on the lawn yet. (But I’m still riding my bike.)

2023-11-29 19.09.41IMG_8312

On Wednesday, Aaron got the “all clear” from his doctor to go back to normal activity, so I took him by Royal Rangers for the first time in a couple weeks. It was nice to see Aaron back with his fellow Rangers again, reading about Boaz and playing carpet ball together. They had an activity throwing a ball to one another to learn each others’ names, and they prayed over long-time Ranger Brian as he prepared to go to Boot Camp in a week or two.

Then on Thursday, I got to introduce my dad to state senator Kathleen Kauth, who was the guest speaker at the Business and Professional People for Life luncheon. We arrived early enough to chat with her a bit before lunch about the upcoming session in the unicameral and the new DailyWire movie Lady Ballers (which Vivian and I watched on Friday).

IMG_89972023-12-02 13.22.36

When December 1st came around on Friday, we finally got to start digging into our Bonne Maman Advent calendar of jams and jellies. The first was a “white nectarine-peach-lemon verbena spread,” which we had on a few Club Crackers before bedtime.

Then on Saturday, I got a workout helping the Mills with a clean-up effort in their yard. Their treehouse had apparently caught on fire and now needed to be dismantled and taken down, which meant hauling lots of large pieces of charred lumber. I also got to see a few of the Mills pets, such a Milo the cat and Love the duck, who Hannah named from the heart-shaped spot on her neck.

2023-12-03 15.24.292023-12-03 14.27.28

On Saturday, we spent part of the afternoon down at the Durham Museum with the kids, this time bringing Aaron along to see the tree, the trains, play in Julia Child’s kitchen, and talk to Santa.

The kids also got to explore the gift shop a bit (and got a new Beanie Boo). Hannah was amused by the statue of half a man behind the ticket counter and decided to try completing it by crawling inside. Then we got some root beer floats before calling it a day.

IMG_91222023-12-05 20.28.33

Then on Tuesday, I got to meet pastor, businessman, and Presidential candidate Ryan Binkley up at Crossroads Church in Council Bluffs. It was a forum hosted by Free Speech America on “faith in the public square,” and I assumed much of Binkley’s talk would be on the subject of faith and Christianity. Instead, he talked quite a bit about health care, the budget deficit, and the Republicans’ messaging problem of being perceive a uncaring about the poor.

There was an engaging Q&A session afterward, and then the church Pastor had everyone pray over Binkley before they left. I also got Binkley to sign one of his hats for me (which read “WTF Way to Freedom”). He seemed like a very reasonable candidate and very interested in reaching out to the other side (though strangely not as much a warrior against the woke as I’ve see in fellow candidate Vivek Ramaswamy).
