Aaron’s Surgery & Veteran’s Day Weekend

On Tuesday, Aaron went to Boys Town to have surgery to correct a tethered spinal cord, and the procedure went very well. He spent a day at the hospital sleeping and playing a new video game we got for his Switch, which kept him busy as he was recovering.

He came home the next day, and that evening, his friends at Royal Rangers had a card signed by all of them along with a gift — a new chess set to keep him busy (and to earn his Chess Merit). Then on Saturday, Grandma and Grandpa brought by a cookie cake later onto welcome Aaron home.

In the midst of this, our mutual friend Richard’s dad had passed way, so on Tuesday I went to Community Bible Church in Millard to attend the Memorial Service. I got to meet a few members of the Burney Family as well as catch up a bit with the handful of mutual friends we have form our days at “Great Adventures” over a decade ago, some of whim I hadn’t seen in several years.

We had some absolutely gorgeous fall weather in the meantime, sunny and warm enough for a couple bike rides in short sleeves and shorts, which was quite lovely for the middle of November.

On Friday night, I took Hannah by the Victory Apartments for a program with the American Heritage Girls (and a local Boy Scout Troop) to wish the residents a Happy Veterans Day. They did a few patriotic songs and recited some of their pledges and oaths.

Afterward, they took some “blessings bags” that they had stuffed and handed them out to the residents who had come down tot he gymnasium for the program. Afterward, they went upstairs to some of the residents quarters to knock on doors and hand them out to residents there before heading home (to have some of the spicy Ramen Vivian made for dinner).

Saturday morning, I went down with Hannah to Olde Town Bellevue to talk in a parade with Linda Vermooten, candidate for the Nebraska State Board of Education. She had a very good turnout for a race most people wouldn’t even have heard about four years ago. Lexi and her kids came along for the walk with us, as did our old friend Luke Taylor.

I was snapping photos all along the way as Hannah handed out candy We got some hot cocoa from a local church toward the end, and then I suggested Linda hang around for a photo op with Senator Deb Fischer, who was walking a ways behind us. Linda got to walk along with her for a block and even got a group picture with her entourage. I got a few photos of the two together, of course, though Deb was insistent that it wasn’t an endorsement yet (which I believe might be a rule with the RNC).

On Sunday, we had some lovely sunny weather in the 60s, so I dragged Hannah over to help rake leaves with Uncle Jonny for an hour or two. In years past she would have had fun jumping in the pile of leaves and making a nest, but she seemed to have outgrown some of that and was a bit more annoyed having to help with a household chore. Mostly, it was nice just to get out of the house and get some fresh air for a little bit before starting another week.

45

I turned 45 on Tuesday, creeping every closer to the half-century mark and wondering how I got this old so fast. I’m still finding plenty of time to celebrate, of course, and also getting in some bike riding to keep what I have left in working order.

On Tuesday morning, my parents took me out to breakfast at the Lighthouse Café (while they got an oil change). I learned from the staff that this little diner is actually a kind of Christian ministry based out of Glenwood, Iowa, spreading the Gospel through breakfast. I had some heavenly waffles with sausage and eggs and talked with them a bit about our kids’ start to the school year and what craziness is going on in our public schools. They also gave me a gift — a new MAGA hat with 45-47 printed on the side. I guess that means I’ll have to wear it for the next two years!

Then I met Vivian and Aaron for lunch at Chick-Fil-A and had their Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich, which was quite amazing. I also got to have a birthday ice cream cone, thanks to a reward in my app.

That evening, Vivian fried up a tasty ribeye with a loaded baked potato for a delicious birthday dinner for me. Then I spent an hour or two down the street in Papillion celebrating the campaign kickoff of my friend Linda Vermooten, who’s running for State Board of Education. It was a strange amalgam of friends including “establishment” types like my friends Derek and Matthew, campaign managers for Deb Fischer and Don Bacon, respectively, “MAGA Republican” Fanchon Blythe who introduced Linda, and even personal friends like Lexi and the Higgins who were also there.

Also in the crowd was fellow SBOE member Kirk Penner, who had two protestors who showed up and allegedly tried to force their way in the venue. I arrived as they were livestreaming and making a fuss out front shortly before the police arrived. The event went on just as planned, however, with other officials like Kathleen Kauth, Ken Ungerman, and Rob Clements (who played the shofar for us) endorsing Linda before her speech.

Afterward, Vivian and the kids met up with me in downtown Papillion to have some birthday ice cream up the street at Graley’s with the kids. We got a couple scoops together and walked down by the waterfront for a bit before heading home and opening some presents. Vivian and the kids all had birthday cards for me, and I got some new socks and a new hard drive among many other things.

I had a bit more of a birthday celebration on Friday. It started with dinner down at Cunningham’s Pub & Grill in the Old Mill area (a place I chose specifically because it was listed on PublicSQ). I had some sangria and a “Cinnamon Toast Crunch” birthday shot along with some Cajun tots and a black and blue burger. Lisa, Jon, and Dan joined us for dinner and a few hours of “BS’ing,” just like old times.

Afterward I went down to Jitterbugs Night Out for the first time in a year. They had new carpet in the old Eagles’ Lodge, but the place somehow seems timeless, changing very little over the 17 years I’d been coming here. Most of the faces were unfamiliar, but I still saw some familiar ones, such as Eric, Jared and Jordan, Eric, Elizabeth, and a handful of others. Maxine from work was also there, which was a bit of a surprise, so I got to dance with her for the first time as well. I got to have my birthday jam along with a few others in the crowd to wrap up the evening, just like old times.

Louisville, Mahoney, Pence, Elder, and Trump.

It’s a busy season for Presidential candidates, with two of them tag-teaming a joint visit up at scenic Arrowhead Park, as well as an event with remarks by the former 45th President on Friday. We also had a lovely cold front move in, making temperatures downright pleasant for July and pushing us for some mandatory time outdoors.

The thunderstorms that came through on the Fourth of July delayed a few of the local fireworks shows. We hoped to catch one on Wednesday at Lake Manawa, but despite the show apparently till being on, the beach was inexplicably closed, making our visit not nearly as fun as we hoped. The kids preferred swimming over fireworks, so we drove up to Louisville Lake to swim for a bit instead. Then they closed less than an hour after we arrived, so we resigned ourselves to a short swim and a few snacks as a flock of geese came in to clean up the beach in our wake.

Then on Friday, I had lunch with Attorney General Mike Hilgers and a handful of our my mutual political friends. He got to tell us about a a few recent Supreme Court victories, and I got to chat a bit with my new friend Vermooten, who happens to live a few blocks away and is running for the State Board of Education.

On Friday evening, I drove up to scenic Arrowhead Park in Neola, Iowa for a dual campaign stop. Both Mike Pence and Larry Elder came by the Pottawattamie County GOP meeting at Breezy Lodge. The former Vice-President came with his wife Karen, and I was kicking myself for not bringing her book, which I’d had the VP sign a few years ago. Plenty of others in the crowd brought their own books for the VP to sign, and one man gave the VP his brownie.

Larry Elder dropped by a little later (sporting a suit and tie and a pair of garish sneakers), and I naturally had to get a selfie with the “black face of white supremacy.” The two greeted guests for a while before giving a pair of stump speeches. Pence talked extensively about the shortcomings of the Biden administration and gave a testimony on his Christian faith. Elder talked about issues with fatherlessness and the myth of systemic racism in America. Several media people were in the room as well, including Marianne Levine form the Washington Post who interviewed me before I left, as well as Jeff Zeleny from CNN.

Then on Friday, Donald Trump came to town. It was raining all morning, but that didn’t deter hundreds of people form lining up starting at 5 PM the previous day. I managed to get VIP access, letting me skip the line and grab a spot close to the front (which was nice since I couldn’t bring my “good” camera). RSBN was on hand doing interviews with several of the guests, as were multiple local stations. I saw some familiar faces from the NEGOP, such as Chairman Underwood and Dawn Liphardt, among a handful of “NE grassroots patriots.” I also got to meet Roger Stone, who of a handful of VIPs whose names I recognized up near the front of the stage, and bumped into an Uncle Sam cosplayer out front.

The event had an agricultural theme, with signs colored John Deere green and yellow with “Farmers for Trump” hats being handed out. They had a panel on farming before Trump arrived, taking the stage with members of the new ‘Farmers for Trump” coalition.

Trump took a few questions after his remarks and then went down to greet some guests in the front row before leaving. I was quick enough to get a spot at the fence and shake his hand as he passed by (with Secret Service pressed all around). Trump apparently went to buy a few people ice cream down at the Dairy Queen on Broadway afterward.

SO after all that activity from July 4 and Presidential candidates, our following weekend was relatively quiet. I mowed by parents’ lawn and helped fix a bed frame, and then we dragged the kids out of the house to spend the afternoon at Mahoney State Park. We walked along the nature trail by the river together, finding some interesting plant life along the way, as well as an Indian burial ground. Then we climbed the lookout tower to for a family photo and a good look at the Platte River.

We finished our visit with a brief trip to the playground and then a stop at Denny’s for some breakfast-for-dinner together before heading home.

Then on Monday, I got to delve just a bit more into politics at the Pachyderm luncheon at Ahmad’s Persian Cuisine. I got to hear from a full slate of education leaders, including Spencer Head, Omaha Public Schools board president Matt Ray, Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors member Adam Gotschall (who announced his run for reelection at the luncheon), and State Board of Education Candidates Lisa Schonhoff and Linda Vermooten. Both Spencer and Ray talked extensively about public education and the challenges of teaching a diverse student body, where many of the students speal English as a second language and over 600 are actually homeless.

I had plenty of questions of my own but didn’t get the chance to ask any. It’s just as well, as they mostly involved whether or not we ought to pull Aaron out of OPS completely. We’ll keep praying about that.
